A New Musical Direction For Slipknot?

So I got my hands on the first release of Slipknots new song All Hope Is Gone. It was free for download on the Roadrunner records site. If you go check it out, it may still be up on the homepage, if not archived somewhere. Anyways, I thought it was a good song, just not what I had hoped for. I was really hoping for them to return to the sound that captivated me on their first self titled album. I think its mostly in the drums. Their first album really utilised the three drummers perfectly, creating this wall of sound, this tribal rhythm which just blew you away. Don’t get me wrong, All Hope Is Gone is a great song, it just wasn’t what I had hoped for. They drums were very generic of extreme metal, blast beats and constant double kicks, one guitar playing a chugging low riff in rhythm to the drums, the other pulling neat licks over the top. the chorus was good however, breaking away from the mold set in the verse. Until the chorus came in and the musical style changed, i was really disappointing with the song. Spose it just takes some getting used to......the more i listen to it, the more i like it, so here it is:

It’s a great song, it really is and the more I listen the more I enjoy, I simply wanted something more.…….Something that I found in their first proper release, Psychosocial (below). I was a bit shocked to see so many mask changes but....hey….its just a mask…its not everything. What’s important is the music….and the return of all three drummers going nuts just makes this song oh so wonderful. As you can hear, it’s a lot slower than All Hope Is Gone and really uses the drums effectively. When I heard it, it made me feel the same as the first time I heard Wait And Bleed…XD woo the excitement .

Oh and …did anyone else notice Corey’s clean vocals…anyone else think they have gotten a little bit better? I mean he was good before. If he wasn’t, they would never have produced songs like Circle and Vermillion pt2 which rely solely on his clean vocals.
As for having a new musical direction....i think their just pushing the boundaries of what they can do, experimenting and furthering themselves as a band. we really wont be able to know until we have the entire album available....which it wont be for another fifteen days
Neways tell us what you think…love it, hate it…want to make sweet love to it.
