Damnit I Want More Daft Punk!!!
Damnit I want more daft punk!
Daft punk have been kickin’ round for the better part of twenty years but it wasn’t until the last few years that they became one of my favourite Electronica groups.
What alarmed me was that although they had been around for as long as I have been alive, they have very little albums to show for it. I got their back catalogue…then there was nothing, all baring their Alive 2007 release. Common sense says “find another band with a similar sound”…well this is where the problems arise. As far as I can find, there is very little by the way of similar artists to Daft Punk.
Sure there are many using the Electronica sound, groups like Justice, Muscles, Cut Copy (who supported Daft Punk on their 2007) VNV Nation, Neuroticfish, Icon Of Coil, Blaqk Audio, Rotersand, Vitalic and to some extent Suicide Commando (however they reach into the boarders of Industrial/Techno in many instances).
Although there are a few groups, as listed which produce in a similar style, all of them lean off into other subgenres, Blaqk Audio with their Electronica, Sythpop musical base braches off due to the lyrical content and vocals of AFI’s singer, Davey Havok. VNV nation along with Rotersand, share many of the electronica roots with Daft Punk, yet venture further into Futurepop with their flowing synths, vocals and lyrical content.
Icon Of Coil touch further into the Industrial side of Electronica and Suicide Commando create a sound resembling Industrial Techno or a slowed down Gabber with its distorted bass kicks and vocals.
This leaves us with only Vitalic and Justice who share more common ground with Daft Punk. Vitalic, although catchy, don’t appear to have any real depth in their albums, in particular Ok Cowboy. Each song seems to be simply another take on the last track, no real individuality between the tracks. Cut Copy, although gaining great publicity by touring with Daft Punk, failed to produce the goods in my opinion, not because they are bad, merely because there is too much indie dance in there…but maybe that’s just me.
Muscles is a newcomer to the electronica scene. He sort of surfaced out of nowhere late 2007 n all of a sudden everyones in love with him. granted his album Guns Babes Lemonade is prity damn awsome, it is however the vocals that set him aside from Daft Punk. The music is very similar but the vocals sound like they are being sung by a drunk teenager outside his house yelling to be let in.
Justice on the other hand, a much more commercial hit than Vitalic, with hit songs like D.A.N.C.E. and DVNO, share the same roots as Daft Punk yet have their own individual take upon the genre with their catchy lyrics and riverting bass n synth lines in songs such as Phantom pt1/2.
There seems to be a serious lack of original groups in the Electronica genre who are catchy and enjoyable, while keeping close to the genre of Electronica that everyone loves thanks to Daft Punk this may be put down to the fact, I live in Australia and we don’t have the biggest Electronica culture.
Damnit I want more Daft Punk! On an upside, I did find that Stardust was a side project of one of the members of Daft Punk, but sadly….it just doesn’t cut the standard of two robots making some of the most incredible songs in the last twenty years. I challenge you to find a better song that Robot Rock…..I mean c’mon, they made a kick arse song with only two words…..tell me that isn’t musical genius.
if you happen to dissagree with me..tell me how wrong i am...i might even listen. if you know of any bands who fit this genre hit me up i want to hear them.
