Escape The Fate
So I did my hair, donned the skinnies and followed the growing crowd of hardcore and emo kiddies as we trekked our way across Sydney to The Roundhouse to see Escape The Fate.
I wasn’t a huge fan of ETF when I first heard them, actually I heard them and thought they were pretty ordinary, until months latter I discovered them again, not realising that I had heard them before and was initially repulsed. This time around however I began to enjoy them more and more and realized that hey wait….these guys are really pretty good. Bit too popish in some songs but that hardly detracts from the enjoyment. So I did what any fan does…I went and got tickets to their Sydney show.
Finally after lining up for what seemed like hours, we were let in to what I must say, is one funky venue. If you haven’t been there, the Roundhouse is as the name suggests, a big circular room with an upstairs bar and balcony which circles right around the floor below.
The two support acts played and were absolutely fantastic, so good that latter ill be doing a separate post on the first band, A Silent Fiction.
I was led to believe that ETF would begin playing at 8, how wrong I was. It was around or just after 10 that they finally began to play, after an hour wait between the time The Motive In Motion finished and ETF began. The crowd was getting more than a little impatient but when ETF finally came on, but it was well worth the wait.
Throughout the first two bands, there would be the kids up the front, then just behind them a circle pit and everyone else would just stand around and watch either the kids throwing down in the pit or watch the band.
When ETF came on however, the amount of people on the floor seemed to double and push towards the front so much that when someone tried to open up a pit, it would last no time at all before screaming fans pushed forward towards the band closing the pit. I was a bit disappointed with this as I would have dearly loved to get into the pit. But as is with many gigs, the more popular the band is, the more people are in the pit but not dancing, rather engaging in a sort of push-mosh where they simply run and jump into each other. Not really my thing, so I stayed out and wished that I had of gone in during A Silent Fiction when u were actually able to throw down in the pit without getting jumped on. This aside, I was there to see ETF not lament not being in the pit.
Despite Craig (singer, originally of BlessTheFall, Replaced Ronnie after Ronnie got in trouble with the law and is on 5 years probation) having broken his foot two days before the gig, he and the rest of the band put on one fantastic show. I don’t think ive heard girls scream as much as the group behind me did, when Craig lent over to Max (bassist) and kissed him….my ears are still ringing from the high pitched scream that ensued.
Craig tells Max that he wants to see max stage dive from the balcony into the crowd, naked, before the end of the show, because Craig has a broken foot and cant do it himself. Max wasn’t naked, but he did it lol, happened to land on a girls head wen he landed. Everyone else had their arms up to catch him…not this girl lol. The second last song comes and Craig disappeared of stage, only to appear at the railing of the balcony, broken foot dangling over the edge as he positioned himself to take the dive. This time everyone was actually watching when he jumped and no girls got knocked out lol.
I don’t know if these guys were as good to see live as Madina Lake or Mark The Sky, but they were defiantly one of the most energetic bands I’ve ever seen and the crowd obviously loved it as they went mental as well. Craig does a fantastic job of not trying to sound like Ronnie, while keeping the song sounding the same. If you have a chance to see these guys live, take it take it take it. Please do yourself a favour and see them or at least get their albums as they really are well worth a listen.
