Hatebreed
Everyone knows who Hatebreed is, and if you don’t, you fucking should. Their godfathers of the hardcore/metal crossover, capturing the raw nature, lyrical content and rhythm of hardcore, while adding that heavy feel of metal and complete headbang-ability to their tracks.
I know what your thinking, “that’s called metalcore. Hardcore Metal=Metalcore”. Not true. There is a great difference to be found between the sound of metalcore bands like Haste The Day, Parkway Drive, I Killed The Prom Queen and Bleeding Through, and that of Hatebreed. Hatebreed still retain that core punk element, so often lost in the crossover.
One thing that stands out to me the most about Hatebreed is the positive lyrics. I was at first, quite surprised with the positive, uplifting lyrical content coming from a band called Hatebreed.
Take the song Live For This for instance. The lyrical content revolves around having goals and making it through struggle in pursuit of said goals and ambitions, devoting ones life to achieving what their goals.
This Is Now is another that grabbed me instantly with its driving chants and focus on living for today, and making the most of it. Controlling ones self, therefore controlling their destiny.
A strong focus on overcoming adversity is not uncommon in hardcore punk, but Hatebreed’s endless perfection of this astounds me.
Hatebreeds last album, Supremacy, released in 06 is extremely catchy and addictive, carrying on the vibe, tone and feel, from The Rise Of Brutality, released 3 years prior.
Three years on and Hatebreed are set to release their 6th studio album, For The Lions on May 5th. For The Lions comprises of 18 cover songs from bands Hatebreed found influential in building their own unique sound and I simply cannot wait to hear what musical progressions have been made in the past three years and how they present each of these classic hardcore and metal songs.
Songs from all the great metal and punk bands are present on this album. From Obituary to Suicidal Tendencies to Slayer and The Misfits. This should be a truly unique execution and combination of sound and I am simply peaking on the prospect of hearing Hatebreeders (misfits) performed heavy-as-fuck, something that should be done far more often for classic misfits tracks.
