Mark The Sky
Mark The Sky = GOD!! …well.. no coz I’m sure they’d see that as rather blasphemous considering they are a Christian band and all. But their without a doubt the next best thing.
Their album Rise is without a doubt the best album I have EVER heard…..and….it only cost me 5 bucks. So what its an EP.. its worth more than that.
So far I’ve seen them live twice, once before I knew who they were…. I walked into the shed they were playing in and was like “wow….who’s…this… their good..” thought nothing of it till a few days latter when I found out that it was Mark The Sky I had seen. At that time their Rise EP wasn’t available so all I could listen to was the three demos up on internet sites. The second time I saw them was at the Blackstump festival. I wasn’t sure what time they were playing in the hardcore tent so I wondered up to a guy holding a box… looking as though he knew something about the organisation. Turns out the guy was the Bass player for Mark The Sky and in that little box was their Rise EP…..selling them for FIVE BUCKS!! At that price I should’a bought five of them so that I didn’t feel like I was ripping them off.
Anyways I stuck around and went nuts in the small pit but hectic pit while they played. Not many people must have known about them as the crowd to start with was pretty small. It grew however into a decent sized crowd but not as big as it was for Mortification….that’s one thing I cant get my head around….hundreds showed up to see a band that sound like their slaughtering a wilder beast while randomly bashing strings and beating drums in what truly was a hideous display of “extreme metal”…..gar!!! but that’s a rant for another day.
I got home and whacked the Rise EP on and have not stopped listening to this day. From the intro to the outro...... the album is truly remarkable. They seemed to capture the energy of a live performance to an enthusiastic crowd, mixing it with the RAWR power of hardcore, droning melodies, throaty screams contrasted with the smooth, clean vocals of Rhys creating an EP which displays the best of a truly unique band. I have not heard a melodic hardcore band that has been able to captivate me as Mark The Sky have. Sadly there is only the Rise EP to listen to. So I wait for another release….which doesn’t seem to be happening anytime soon, and pray that they make an appearance at Blackstump this year. Please do yourself a favour and go to their myspace (Mark The Sky on myspace), or just go and pay the 11 dollars on itunes and buy the EP. It will not disappoint.
