Norma Jean vs The Anti Mother
Almost everyone I know hates Norma Jean….i cant follow why. Granted their Bless The Martyr & Kiss The Child album could be a lil hard on the common ear…but any album with a song like Memphis Will Be Laid To Waste on it is just pure gold all ova.
Ok….jus so we straight…..I WOULD MAKE SWEET LOVE TO THIS BAND!!
So lets get to the really exciting bit….their new album.
About a week before Norma Jean vs The Anti Mother was set to be released, I saw that it had been leaked onto the internet……Ooo the moral dilemma. Do I get it??? knowing full well that once I have it, chances r I wont go out n buy it like I should because ill be permanently attached to a set of speakers and therefore unable to go and buy it. So I didn’t…I waited until it came out today.
Needless to say I got it straight away and O…M…F…G!! firstly, the singing has just got better. After Josh Scogin left in 2002 and was replaced with Cory, the singing style changed. It lost a certain edge, theunrefined, throaty scream was gone, replaced a chest-filled RAWR! Which Cory produces to great effect. Between the release of Redeemer and The Anti Mother, Cory has gained something in his vocal style which brings back a slight element of the throaty scream. The clean vocals have also been improved, not that they were bad before, just that they are more appealing now and are used much more and well…its jus....awesome.
At the moment your probably thinking that I’m never going to say anything bad about this album, that its completely flawless. Well yes it is flawless as in, at no point did I go “oh gee I wish that wasn’t there” however at the end of it, I kinda felt that it jus…wasn’t quite heavy enough. It was missing a certain element that made Bless The Martyr such an amazing album.
The song Surrender Your Sons... for instance using Cove Reber of Saosin and Chino Moreno of the Deftones as guest vocals, simply sounded very much like a heavier Deftones song. This is possibly because of the influence of Chino on vocals and that the band most likely wrote the song with him in mind. On that note however, during Opposite of Left and Wrong, which used Page Hamilton of Helmet, they managed to not sound like Helmet at all. All in all, I think I might just miss the standout songs like Memphis Will Be Laid To Waste and I Used To Hate Cell Phones But Now I Hate Car Accidents.
If I had a criticism, it would be that its not quite heavy enough and that there isn’t one song that stands out and grabs me as above all the others, (this could be due to the album being so wonderful that no one song can jump out as the best). However I don’t have a criticism, I cant criticise this album, instead I merely hope that in their next outing, they add back in the truly unique hardcore sound that was found on Bless The Martyr.
