Q Noise - May 2008

Refused are F**kin dead!!

Refused are dead and i am not a happy chappie!!
im going to make an outrageous claim.....Refused, as their album "the shape of punk to come" states, DID shape punk to come!
go on...shoot me down...you no u want to...

Refused, a Hardcore punk band hailing from Umeå, Sweden, formed in 1991, releasing their self titled demo the same year and have been big players in the politically fuelled punk scene until and even after their break up in 1998 following the release of their final, definitive album, The Shape of Punk To Come.
This album is possibly the most incredible album I have ever heard as there is not a bad song on their. All of them just blow me away with the lyrical depth, musical ingenuity and experimentation.
I realise it has been ten years since their break up, but being that I’m still only in my teens, it is acceptable for me to only have heard Refused in the last few years.
The album consists of twelve songs, each equal to the last in energy, power and meaning, creating an album which is just unforgettable and one that really did shape punk to come. i guarantee, every new punk band out there today, has in some way been influenced in their style, by Refused. It was 1998…. and they produced an album which is bordering on post-hardcore!! I mean.....come on, to think Rage called themselves “renegades of funk”…what does that make Refused? It makes them Pioneers of Punk that’s what!!

After completing the album the band began to fall apart and stated in a press release that they broke up because they felt that as a band, there was nothing left to accomplish. This however can be disputed as to if it was the soul reason for the break up. No doubt it had a little to play in the break up but surely it could not be the only reason.
Refused played their final show in the basement of Fred Ziomek, the guitarist for tour mates Darkest Hour. Around four hundred fans showed up for the infamous concert which was eventually closed down by the police during the bands performance of Rather Be Dead. Some sources indicate that the police stormed the basement during the crescendo where Dennis Lyxzén (singer) screams "rather be ALIVE!" How much of this is mere fantasy or poetic licence is debatable.

And that was that....no more Refused. I come along, 8 years down the track n think "omg wow, what an incredible band"...but they don’t exist anymore...no more albums only three albums and a few scattered EP's to show for it.
"The candle that burns twice as bright, burns half as long".

At least I will continue to enjoy The Shape Of Punk To Come as it will continue to be one of my favourite albums ever. This is a must for any punk fan of old or new. It really is one of the most groundbreaking albums every made and I mean that in every possible way. It embodies the essence of punk's anti-establishment and political stance while reinventing the musical content as demonstrated through the song New Noise which comments on how punk cannot continue with anti-establishment and revolutionary lyrical content, while the music stays the same and is adopted by mainstream musicians. The new noise created by Refused made fellow political punk bands like Bad Religion, Pennywise and The Dead Kennedy’s look like pop/punk artists.
I cannot stress enough, the importance of this album to the punk genre as a whole as well as how much of an incredible piece of art it is.
GET IT GET IT GET IT!! If its the last thing you do, make sure you have a copy.

Totally agree Stickman. The Shape of Punk to Come and At The Drive-in's Relationship of Command were the two most influencial punk album in recent music. Easily the most since Nirvana, and before that probably since punk's first waves.
