To Cover or not to cover?
Cover songs....
For a long time, I’ve been a huge fan of cover songs, pop covering metal, metal covering pop, punk covering country, I love it all. Some songs are said to be “too good to cover”….well how do we know, unless we try. Sure some covers have sucked something chronic. Take Avril Lavange’s version of Fuel by Metalica….wow…could it be done any worse? But on the other hand you have songs like The Living End’s, Under The Covers album in which they covered bands like U2, Frank Sinatra, and Soft Cell, and did so perfectly.
When Mr “Soulja boy” (captain bellend of the year….oooh how that guy aggravates me....the guy did a follow up song called Ya Bitch....please....do yourself a fav, go to youtube and search it. the song is hilarious, how that boy makes any money is beyond me), released his song Crank Dat, I was appalled. Firstly at the horrific rapping and secondly the appalling lyrical content employed “you…..crank dat soldier boy, den superman dat ho”….wow…. not only was his rapping just plain bad, the lyrics were awful. language aside, some like this song and I can understand that it was a hit because, grieved as I am to admit it, it does have a slightly catchy beat, but the constant “yooooo’ing” and sexually explicit innuendo really ruined it for me.
Shortly after its release however, I heard the Screamo version by I Set My Friends On Fire which is much, much, much better because they make no attempt to prove how hardcore they are, or how much “money and ho’s” they have. These two boys simply took a bad song and made it passable.
I then wanted to hear what else they had done. Here is where the problems arise. I kept hearing people mention the “Calvary kids”, who are mentioned everywhere, but nowhere is there a list of songs by them which are accurate. I did find one list however, claiming that they were responsible for Screamo covers of; Baby Got Back, Low, Party Like A Rockstar, the Pokemon theme, Soulja Boy (misslabled “Crank Dat”), Milkshake and Toxic. (I am told that there is more but I am unable to listen to these so I cannot pass judgement upon them).
After listening to the songs on this list however, i discovered that most of these are not covers by a group called the Calvary Kids, rather a collection of covers, simply mislabelled.
Firstly, Baby Got Back (originally performed by Sir Mixalot) was covered by a band called Throwdown.
Low (by Flo Rider featuring T-Pain) was covered by Brokencycle.
Soulja Boy is actually Crank Dat Calvary Boy (or simply Crank Dat) by I Set My Friends On Fire.
Milkshake (by Kelis) was covered by Goodnight Nurse.
As for the Pokemon theme, Toxic (Spears) and Party Like A Rockstar (Shop Boyz), they are proving much harder to track down the original artist, but I would like to bet my left nut and a kick in the shins, that it is not the Calvary Kids. Why? Because each sounds completely different. I would be more inclined to believe that Toxic was covered by I Set My Friends On Fire, as the quality and sound is similar to that of Crank Dat. As for Party Like A Rockstar, the only cover that I have found, which is correctly labelled, is by MurderSheWrote, an unsigned Hardcore/Screamo band from Chicago, and it most defiantly did not sound like the version I have.
If any knows the artist who covered these songs, or who exactly, the Calvary Kids are, please tell me as the best I have at the moment is, that the Calvary Kids are an illusive fiction band created by I Set My Friends On Fire simply through dropping their name in the beginning of Crank Dat.
Not all Screamo covers are good. the Pokemon Theme for instance is absolutely atrocious. but, ill give anything a listen once and i'll most probably appreciate any cover, no matter what it is of, as long as the artist makes a decent effort to transform the song into a different genre, something the recent wave of Screamo/Hardcore covers do very effectively.
Oh and if I have misspelt it and its Cavalry not Calvary Kids, please correct me, I’m only going on what Mr internets tells me.
