Where Triple J’s “Hottest 100” 2007 went wrong
Now I realise that the hottest 100 is voted for by Australian listeners but there are some serious issues with the top ten here.
Firstly I take serious issue with #9 on the list. A friend told me to search the net for Soko’s Ill Kill Her. I did, and was utterly appalled at what I was hearing. Honestly I wanted to know who to contact about getting the last four minutes of my life back. The girls voice….well…..that just failed to please. Oh and can someone please teach that girl proper pronounciation…..you don’t pronounce Kill with a “Qu”!!
Ohk so firstly, putting Soko in at number nine was the biggest mistake ever. how can she possibly be ahead of Muscles (who, with Ice Cream came in at #14)?
The Panics, who came in at #10 are OK at best. The song, Don’t Fight It has a catchy tune, its alright but how can they be voted above songs like My People by The Presets who took the dance floor by storm (and were absolutely incredible live).
Maybe its just me, maybe I don’t truelly appreciate the Australian indie scene enough. At least Daft Punk made #7 with Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger (Alive 2007 mix) and the Foo Fighters made #6 with The Pretender.
One band who did make the top ten but deserve a higher place than #5 is Faker. This Heart Attack was such a hit, it has spawned 3 Remixes, one featured on the Ministry Of Sound, Clubbers Guide 2008 (Miami Horror Mix). The original song however, is even better than the three dance mixes put together, how the Australian audience could possibly place Silverchairs “straight Lines” above This Heart Attack amazes me.
Not nocking on Silverchair, their incredible musicians but….whats that..did someone just yell out “SELL OUT!” oh yes..that right. What happened to the grungy anger fuelled teenage anthems we got so fond of from Silverchair, prior to their break up. Oh im sure they are still talented musicians but come on, just because your older and more “mature” doesn’t mean you have to sell out n start writing pop music.
Cold War Kids? Wernt they a hit in 2006? Yeh…that’s right, Hang me Up To Dry was a big success in 2006. so Whats it doing in a 2007 hottest 100?
Other than these few discrepancies, the Hottest 100 includes some incredible songs and very talented artists. I was however very disappointed with the additions to the top ten as stated above. No doubt these songs should have been included on the 100 but in the top ten? I thought Australian listeners were better than that.

MYSTRO MUSIC
I thought I would share with you a few reasons why I disagree with a few things you have said.
First of all as a person who studies Music Marketing and production I will tell you that a list such as the hottest 100 (of which I am a big fan of) has other factors to it's voting which people might not know about. The hottest 100 in compiled in January of every year and because of that, where a song will place on the list has to do with whether at that point it has reached it's target audience or not. You also have to remember that lists like this one are voted by many people who listen to many different stations. So for instance Faker's This Heart Attack (which I also agree is an awesome song) was released on the 27 of October 2007 and it would have been played on radio for a month or two before that. The song had been played on triple j for a couple of months, it was popular and so therefore it got to No. 5. Only before it placed at no.5 was it spun a few times on commercial radio after the hottest 100 the commercial market started pushing the single a lot more. After lots of radio airplay and 6 months after it's release it peaked at no 9 on the Aria Singles Chart. So it didn't reach it's peak audience or popularity until months after it was on the list, if you held the vote again now it would probably be higher. So my point is that how well a song will do has a lot to do with when it was released.
Secondly Soko’s ‘I’ll Kill her’ I think was an awesome song, I don’t know if I would put it in the top 10 but certainly the top 15. As for her pronunciation, she is French so if you were expecting her to speak like an English person with a stick up her ass you were asking for too much. I think it’s a beautiful song and I love the French style and way to which it is done. I also thought Muscles Ice Cream should have been higher in the list.
Thirdly Once again the Presets song My People was released in December last year and it didn’t get a wider audience until a month or two ago. I was also not that bigger fan of Silverchair’s latest stuff.
And finally as for the Cold war kids their song ‘Hang Me Up To Dry’ was actually released on the 29 of January 2007 so it counted for the 2007 list. Their album Robbers & Cowards that featured the song was released on 10 October 2006.
P.S. I don’t think Muse deserved No. 1 maybe top 10 but not 1.
Q Noise
my dislike for popular music in general has definatly impacted my prejudice against many of the top ten.
thx for the input
